Suzanne Students Score Top Math Awards

Students from Suzanne Middle School’s Math Club were among nearly 150,000 worldwide participants in this year’s Math Olympiad program.

From November to March, the number wizards vied in a series of five monthly contests consisting of five math problems each.   

During weekly practice sessions, math club members geared up for the contest with the help of teacher/coach Amy Erickson and Walnut High Math Club members.  

Congratulations to the following Math Olympiad winners:

In the 6th grade category, Oscar Chou was awarded the 1st Place trophy. Tiffany Chang, Felianne Teng and Derick Tseng tied for 2nd Place, scored in the top 10% and received silver pin awards. Sylvester Yue won the 3rd Place award. He also scored in the top 50% along with Ying Lin, Brandon Young, Jerry Guo, Jonathan Wang, Phillip Leung and Sheldon Zhu. These proud winners received embroidered patches.

In the 7th grade category, Bernard Yu was awarded the 1st Place trophy. Dylan Han took 2nd Place and Charles Gu tied with 6th grader Alice Zhang (from the Math Counts Team), who enrolled in the 7th grade category, for the 3rd Place award.

In the 8th grade category, Sophia Ding was awarded the 1st Place trophy. 7th grader Erica Chang, who enrolled in the 8th grade category, won 2nd Place.

Awards and trophies were presented to the winners on May 1, 2013 during an after school ceremony and banquet attended by Math Counts team members, Math Club members and Walnut High School Math Club student coaches.

Math Counts team members 8th grader Ayesha Ng and 6th grader Aaron Chang were also acknowledged for their 1st Place finish in the AMC 10 (American Mathematics Competition) held at Suzanne Middle School on February 21, 2013. Both students received pins and Young Student Certificates of Achievement for placing in the top 50% as students in grades below grade 10.
