Volunteers to Install Garden at Diamond Point Elementary Sunday

The Growing Home and Slow Food San Gabriel Valley are teaming up to hold the event.

In what organizers hope is the first of many, a garden will be installed by volunteers at Diamond Point Elementary School this Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rishi Kumar, the creator of The Growing Home and a Diamond Point alum, and intern Davis Saul have been working with the school’s principal, Dolores Lobaina, to fundraise for the garden’s installation. More than $1,700 has been raised, and donations of seeds and seedlings have flooded in.

Working alongside The Growing Home is Slow Food San Gabriel Valley, and together the groups hope to install four large raised beds, in-ground gardens, fruit trees, an irrigation system, and a compost pile. They hope to see at least 30 volunteers at the event, and participants are asked to bring shovels, rakes, trowels, gloves, and wheelbarrows, if they have those items.

Organizers also would appreciate any volunteers with pickup trucks to move compost.
