State Superintendent Tom Torlakson has announced the scores of the 2012 Academic Performance Index (API).
The Walnut Valley Unified School District once again exceeded the state goal, receiving a 906 API score.
“We are proud to be one of only eight unified school districts in Los Angeles County and 19 in the State to achieve this distinction,” said Superintendent Dean Conklin.
This is the second consecutive year that Walnut Valley has topped the 900 mark, with a 903 API score in 2011.
“This is the result of the remarkable efforts of our dedicated students, teachers and staff members, parents, and school administrators. They are committed to success despite ongoing financial challenges,” Conklin said.
Additionally, all 14 of our comprehensive schools scored above 800, exceeding the statewide academic achievement target of 800. And for the first time, 11 schools scored over 900.
“Our schools are celebrating this well-deserved recognition of achievement, ” said Director of Educational Programs Jackie Brown. "Our teachers, staff, school community, parents and students continue to work together every day to ensure every child is reaching their full potential. We are so proud of everyone’s commitment and dedication to our student’s accomplishments.”
South Pointe Middle School scored a 922 API, posting the largest district-wide growth of 20 points.
In anticipation of their achievement, teachers and staff members performed a surprise flash mob dance for their students.
“South Pointe Middle School is very proud of our achievement. It took a lot of hard work from our students, staff and school community. It also took a willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure the success of those we serve. A growth of 65 points with our low socio-economic students and 81 points for our Special Education students, is an example of our promise to ensure ALL students are successful here at South Pointe,” said Principal Susan Arzola.
The API is a numeric index that ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1,000. School and student group targets are set at 5 percent of the difference between the school or student group’s Base API score and the statewide target of 800, with a minimum target of 5 points. All numerically significant student groups at a school must meet their growth targets for a school to meet its API growth target.
