Annual Matt's Run Returns to Cal Poly Saturday

The Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship 5K raises money for student scholarships.

Cal Poly plays host to the 7th annual Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship 5k at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The event raises money for scholarships. The endowment plans to give at least 10 awards, bringing the total since the run started to 48, according to Cal Poly Pomona's website.

Matt's Run honors Myers, a Cal Poly Pomona communications student who died in 2005 when a car struck him on campus.  His family, parents Kevin and Chris and sister Jenna, partnered with the university to sponsor an event designed to give back to the community. Myers loved to run, so his family thought a scholarship 5K would be a great way to celebrate his life.

“Our son was an average student,” Kevin said in a Polycentric article. “Getting an education wasn’t the only thing in his life. He gave his time considerably. He volunteered at church and for youth activities, helped the elderly and had a job. Matt had to work hard just to get a B, but being a well-rounded person was just as important to him.”
