WVUSD Chinese American Parents Association Kicks Off Food Drive

Those who want to donate canned and boxed food items may drop them off at Walnut City Hall.

The Walnut Valley Unified School District's Chinese American Parents Association kicked off its annual CAPA Community Food Drive Friday at The Cross Pre-School in Walnut.

Around 100 students from the school lent their voices to the event by singing songs and learned a lesson about the spirit of giving, especially during the holiday season.

Walnut City Councilwoman Mary Su, who also serves as the chair of CAPA, hosted a press conference to announce the start of the drive. Councilman Bob Pacheco also is part of the effort to collect food for families in need.

"In this Thanksgiving season, Walnut residents, we are really blessed, so every year we take the opportunity to initiate this kind of activity," Su said.  "We got 100 The Cross Preschool students to participate in this event because we want to educate them on giving back."

Su, who thanked Pacheco for teaming up with her and CAPA for the effort, said that the food collected will be given to the Walnut Food Bank.  That organization will in turn distribute the collected canned and boxed goods to other food banks and programs in the area such as Meals on Wheels, she added.

Pacheco said that although Walnut is an affluent community, there are families in need in town.

"Especially with children, we know there are a lot of families struggling," he said.  "We want to do all we can."

Pacheco said he hopes next year to get some turkeys to donate.

Those who wish to donate to the food drive may drop off canned and boxed goods from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at Walnut City Hall,
21201 La Puente Road. A box for collection of the items will be at City Hall now through December.
